Where we started...
In 1993 the first families, about 10 per week, were served out of a storage closet in the church building.
Eight years later, the need for food was so great that the pantry partnered with Northern Illinois Food Bank. For the next several years the distribution moved from the foyer to the auditorium and was serving between 150 - 200 families every 2 weeks.
In the spring of 2018 it was obvious that the need in the community was growing and the church space was being taken over by the food that was needed to feed these families. Plans were drawn up and funds were raised to build a 4000 square foot building on the property.
The second Monday of September, 2019, the volunteers of The Giving Point served their first clients in the new building. Prior to the pandemic, approximately 230 families came to “self shop” each week. The need for social distancing and new state regulations brought a whole new challenge to food distribution. Volunteers were up for the challenge.
The Giving Point is currently serving over 400 families per week with prepackaged boxes and items that are picked up daily from local stores. Partnerships with other local agencies have also allowed distribution of hygiene products and diapers.
The vision of The Giving Point is for no-one in our community to be hungry.
The mission and hope of the Giving Point is reaching out into our neighborhoods by providing nutritious meals to those in need.
